Statutory health insurance
Switching and how to take out a policy easily
All persons living in Germany are required to have valid private or statutory health insurance.
Read on and we will tell you when which type of health insurance is available and what you should bear in mind. We will also introduce you to our two partner providers of statutory health insurance and enable you to take out a policy easily with just a few clicks.
Cost reimbursement types
Statutory health insurers will settle the bill for the costs covered by your policy with your doctor or hospital directly. You will only receive an invoice with request for payment if you have accessed services not covered by your policy.
A statutory health insurance provider will usually have to accept any individual. You do not have to answer any questions about your health before taking out a statutory health insurance policy. The costs of treatment for pre-existing conditions can be reimbursed.
Switching your statutory health insurance
Once you have taken out a statutory health insurance policy, you must stay with the provider you have chosen for 12 months. After that, you can switch to a different health insurance provider quite normally. You have a special right to cancel your contract early if your health insurance provider increases your premium.
See here for a comparison of our statutory health insurance partners, AOK and BARMER.
On weekdays your application will usually be confirmed within 48 hours.
Of course. You will receive proof to use for your residence permit and for your university or employer.
