Statutory health insurance

Key information

University students

During the first three months of your course, you can switch from statutory to private health insurance or vice versa. After this point, your decision will be binding for the remainder of your studies.

1. Taking out statutory health insurance
If you want to take out statutory insurance, the statutory health insurance provider will give you a certificate that you present when you register at a university. You should submit this document to your university when you register.

2. Taking out private health insurance

If you want to take out private insurance, you will need to apply for exemption. If you want to take out private insurance, you will need to apply for an exemption from statutory health insurance. You can apply to any statutory German health insurance provider to obtain this exemption. You must apply within three months of starting your course.

It is much cheaper for students to take out private health insurance through MAWISTA than to take out statutory health insurance. However, such policies only cover the costs of treating acute health complaints. This insurance does not reimburse the costs of treatment for pre-existing conditions. If this is an important consideration for you, it makes sense to spend more and take out statutory insurance. We recommend AOK or BARMER for this type of policy.

Employees

If you earn more than €450 per month, you will be insured directly by your employer. With this type of employment, you will be required to pay social security contributions. You must take out statutory health insurance if you previously had private health insurance. In this case, the monthly premium is deducted directly from your monthly income and transferred to the insurance provider by your employer. We recommend you take out this type of policy with AOK or BARMER.

Special features

Premiums

If you are an employee, the premium you must pay will depend on your income/salary. As an employee, your employer pays half of your health insurance premium. If you have a spouse or children who do not have their own income, they will be insured through your policy free of charge. The monthly premium is deducted directly from your monthly income and transferred to the insurance provider by your employer.

If you have statutory health insurance, any spouse, partner or children who have only a low income or none at all will be insured through your policy free of charge. These individuals are eligible to access the full range of services offered by the health insurance provider, with the exception of statutory sick pay, without paying any premiums.

A cheaper rate is available to students until their thirtieth birthday or until they have completed their fourteenth semester. The student rate can only be extended beyond these limits in exceptional circumstances, for example, if the individual is caring for relatives. If you study for longer or are older than this, you must take out statutory or private insurance voluntarily.

Insurance cover

You will be reimbursed for the costs of treatment for illnesses and accidents, and for the costs of medication prescribed by a doctor. The treatment costs that will be reimbursed are fixed.

Note: If your insurance card is marked “European Health Insurance Card” on the back, this means you have health insurance cover throughout the entire EU and do not require overseas health insurance for this region.

Private Krankenversicherung

Cost reimbursement types

Statutory health insurers will settle the bill for the costs covered by your policy with your doctor or hospital directly. You will only receive an invoice with request for payment if you have accessed services not covered by your policy.

Pre-existing conditions

A statutory health insurance provider will usually have to accept any individual. You do not have to answer any questions about your health before taking out a statutory health insurance policy. The costs of treatment for pre-existing conditions can be reimbursed.

Switching your statutory health insurance

Once you have taken out a statutory health insurance policy, you must stay with the provider you have chosen for 12 months. After that, you can switch to a different health insurance provider quite normally. You have a special right to cancel your contract early if your health insurance provider increases your premium.
