Mawista health insurance in Germany
Health insurance for foreign visitors
The MAWISTA tariffs are also ideal for foreigners in Germany.
People with a temporary residence permits must prove that they have health insurance for foreigners every time they extend their visa in Germany. Most immigration authorities require proof that the health insurance is equivalent to statutory health insurance. One such proof is the ‘Certificate for the authorities’, which all insured persons (on the MAWISTA Student and MAWISTA Expatcare plans) from abroad automatically receive along with their other insurance documents. People from countries who require a visa to enter Germany also need proof of travel health insurance valid for their entire stay in order to apply for a Schengen visa.
Single premium insurance
In contrast to annual insurance, single premium insurance insures you for the exact duration of your trip (from – to). The premiums for such international health insurance plans are based on age, destination country (incl./excl. USA/Canada) and the duration of the trip. The premiums for good travel insurance are around EUR 1 per day of your trip.
For trips of up to 8 weeks, an annual tariff is normally cheaper. If a trip will last longer than the maximum trip duration of 56 days prescribed by this tariff, we recommend you take out single premium insurance for such trips abroad.
Single premium travel insurance can be taken out for a duration of up to 365 days and must generally be paid in advance for the entire duration.
For a normal Schengen visa, there is the MAWISTA Visum tariff, which can be taken out for a trip duration of 8 days or more.
The MAWISTA Student tariffs have been developed for language school students, students, guest scientists and scholarship holders. These tariffs have particularly consumer-friendly conditions and can be cancelled on a daily basis at the end of the month.
All the health insurance tariffs we offer for foreigners are valid in Schengen countries. They also therefore cover a short holiday in a neighbouring country. If a foreign guest works while here, they must usually register with a statutory health insurance provider. In addition to health insurance for foreigners, you should also always consider private liability insurance.
For stays of over 5 years, travel insurance is no longer suitable and such people should take out private health insurance. You can find the perfect health insurance plan for foreigners at MAWISTA, whatever your reason for visiting Germany. If you have any questions, give us a call – we’d be happy to help you!
MAWISTA health insurance abroad
Necessity of health insurance
Statutory health insurance providers only offer either insufficient or no coverage abroad, meaning that you should not take a trip abroad without sufficient cover for any medical costs that may be incurred. For example, statutory health insurance providers never cover repatriation from abroad.
Those who have private health insurance are generally better protected for trips abroad, but repatriation is still not included or is insufficiently covered on many tariffs.
This is often the case with cheap tariffs to keep the monthly premiums as low as possible.
For longer stays abroad, particularly outside Europe, it is advisable to clarify with your insurance provider whether there is insurance cover in place in the destination country for the intended duration of your stay.
Annual international travel insurance plans
Tariffs for normal holidays have considerably improved in favour of consumers in recent years. The premium amount has remained relatively stable, and significant improvements to conditions have been made.
For a single person, annual travel insurance costs around EUR 10 per year, for families, policies are available for approx. just EUR 20 per year. These contracts renew every year provided they are not cancelled.
Some current, very good contracts cover all holidays (several stays abroad a year are possible) up to a single trip duration of up to 56 days (8 weeks). Short trips (weekend trips) abroad are also covered by such policies, for example.
Special tariffs for international health insurance
For special trips abroad, the insurance industry has developed special tariffs to meet the needs of the target group. Certain insurance providers in particular specialise in the requirements of special target groups. This makes the tariffs better suited to the needs of customers.
Special tariffs have been developed for:
Students, language school students, trainees, doctoral students/post docs, scholarship holders, work & travel programme participants, au pairs, expatriates and emigrants.
These stays abroad are normally longer and people often have different needs.
Such tariffs can be taken out for a duration of 60 months. Cancellation periods are designed to be consumer friendly, premiums can be paid monthly and claims submitted online. It is often possible to complement them with private liability and/or accident insurance.
The MAWISTA Student tariffs have been developed for language school students, students, guest scientists and scholarship holders. These tariffs have particularly consumer-friendly conditions and can be cancelled on a daily basis at the end of the month.
