Private versus statutory health insurance
The German health care system
Germany provides a good level of universal healthcare and is one of the safest countries in the world. In the event of an emergency, help will arrive within a few minutes. To ensure that everyone in Germany can benefit from good basic medical care and protection against high medical bills, all persons living in Germany must take out health insurance.
The German healthcare system is split into two parts: The statutory health insurance (provided by the state) and the private health insurance (provided by privately owned insurers). The main difference is the level of cover provided and the amount of premium you will pay.
During the first three months of your course, you can switch from statutory to private health insurance. After this point, your decision will be binding for the complete duration of your studies.
Private health insurance: The doctor sends you the bill for the total costs of the treatment. You pay the bill from your account. Afterwards you submit the bill via our claim form. The insurer’s claims department reviews the bill and transfers the reimbursable amount to your account.
Statutory health insurance: Statutory health insurance companies settle the incurred, reimbursable treatment costs directly to the doctor or hospital. A transfer of the costs from your account is not required, in contrast to private health insurance.
Private health insurance: The age limit for the MAWISTA Student tariff is 39 years.
Statutory health insurance: The age limit for the MAWISTA AOK Student tariff is 30 years.
Private health insurance: The costs of treatment for pre-existing conditions will not be reimbursed.
Statutory health insurance: The costs of treatment for pre-existing conditions can be reimbursed.
Private health insurance: If you wish to take out private health insurance, you must apply for exemption from statutory health insurance.Ā
Statutory health insurance: If you wish to take out statutory health insurance, you will receive a certificate from your statutory health insurance company which you must present when enrolling at an university. You must present this document when enrolling at your university.

Bonus programme
The AOK rewards health-conscious behaviour and preventive care with a bonus.
As the AOK community comprises elven independent AOKs and each AOK has regional offers and content, you will need to find out more in advance about the respective bonus programme from an AOK service employee or the relevant AOK website.
Electronic health insurance card
As an AOK member, you will automatically be sent an electronic health insurance card (eGK). You can use this card to prove you are insured with AOK and obtain medical or dental treatments as well as health and preventive checkups.
On the back of your card, you will find the European Health Insurance Card. This means that you will be able to access AOK services at all times, even while abroad.
Health courses
The AOK promotes health courses on exercise, nutrition, stress management/relaxation and substance abuse as well as providing qualified nutritional advice. For example, you can take advantage of the professional videos to exercise effectively at home. You will be reimbursed up to ā¬75.00 for an in-person course and up to ā¬100.00 for an online course. The important thing to note here is that the courses need to be certified.
General practitioner scheme
With the AOK family doctor programme, your GP is your first point of contact for any health issues. They will coordinate your treatment and involve specialists if necessary. This prevents duplicate examinations and you will receive comprehensive, optimally tailored health care from a single provider.
Your benefits:
- Optimal treatment
- No unnecessary treatments thanks to effective cooperation
- Shorter waiting times
- Extra consultation hours in the evenings

Medical info line
Whether you have questions about a diagnosis, a patient information leaflet or a doctorās visit you have already attended ā when it comes to your health, you need assurance fast. Our team of specialist doctors and medical experts is there to give you the information you need 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a treatment process that complements conventional medicine with the aim of relieving limited movement, knots and cramps. It is practised exclusively using the hands without the use of medication or medical devices.Ā
Osteopathic treatment is not generally covered as part of the services offered by statutory health insurance. Costs are therefore covered by the insured person themselves in the first instance. In some regions, the AOK will cover some of the costs, such as in the case of health accounts, as an extension of benefits in kind or as part of bonus programmes. Please check this with your local AOK via the website or from an AOK employee.
Prescription contraceptives
To prevent an unwanted pregnancy, the AOK will pay the costs for a medical consultation and examination for contraception as well as specific contraceptives for insured persons up to the age of 22. Medically prescribed contraceptives can also be covered, e.g. hormonal contraceptives (the pill), hormone-based contraceptive patches and vaginal rings as well as long-term contraceptives. Costs for certain contraceptives will be covered to the same extent as for medicines.
The prerequisite for prescription of contraceptives is an examination and consultation with your doctor. For the examination, all you need is your electronic insurance card. Non-prescription contraceptives such as condoms are not covered.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW
What to do if you get ill or injured
In Germany, you should only go to a hospitalās emergency department if you need urgent medical care in an emergency. If you have an illness or injury that is not classed as an emergency, the normal course of action is to go to see a doctor in a doctorās surgery. You are free to choose which doctors and hospitals you go to. This also includes specialists such as dentists, gynaecologists or dermatologists.
Before visiting a doctor, you should arrange an appointment. We recommend that you call your doctorās surgery and explain your symptoms. The surgery will then arrange an appointment to examine you further and you can avoid a long wait. Many doctorās surgeries also allow patients to book appointments online. If necessary, check whether the doctors at the surgery can provide advice in English as well as German.
Your doctor will give you a prescription for medicines. You hand this in at a pharmacy of your choice in order to receive the corresponding medication. Sometimes there is an additional fee for the medication. People with private insurance pay for the medication themselves first and then submit the bill to the insurer for reimbursement.
Immediate cost coverage
If you decide for a private travel health insurance like MAWISTA Student, an immediate coverage of the costs by the insurer can be essential.Ā E.g. in case of an inpatient or extensive outpatient treatment.
For the organization, the MAWISTA emergency number is available 24/7.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs
In the āAufenthaltsgesetzā is defined, that foreign students could work for a limited period. The period is limited to 120 full or 240 half days (see § 16 para 3 ā Aufenthaltsgesetz). Exceptions to this are the study preparatory measures.
You only need the social security number if you want to have a job in germany. The social security card is presented to the employer at the start of employment. However the social security card remains with the employee until he needs the social security card to show it for a job with another employer.
Normally you donāt have to worry about the issue of a social security card, since this is done automatically on your first-time employment. In this case, tell your employer that it is your first job. Then your employer can apply a social security card for you over a public health insurance (AOK, DAK, KKH, TK, etc ā¦).
