FAQs

When you sign up for the MAWISTA Science health insurance your insurance documents include a treatment slip. You must present the treatment certificate to the physician or hospital prior to the treatment in Germany.

You do not need the treatment slip outside Germany.
In case of acute illness or accident you can choose your physician or hospital. For general illnesses such as influenza, headaches or minor accidents we recommend you visit a general practitioner. Your attending physician can refer you to a specialist, if required. In case of toothache, contact a dentist directly.

In case of severe pain or major accidents outside of regular physician`s hours (e.g. at the weekend) please head directly to a hospital.

Please contact us directly should you require an inpatient treatment at the hospital. The staff of the emergency hotline will coordinate the assumption of the costs with the hospital directly. This offers you the advantage of not having to first pay high hospital costs yourself as the insurer pays the hospital directly.

You can reach our emergency hotline staff around the clock:
Telephone: +49 89 624 24 – 496
Fax: +49 89 624 24 – 246
E-Mail: mawista-schaden@allianz.com

Your physician or hospital will present you with an invoice for visits without overnight stays (out-patient treatment). You must transfer the payment to the attending physician or the hospital. Cash payment is only requested in rare cases.

In order for you to receive quick reimbursement from the insurance company, you need to supply us with the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your insurance number
  • Treatment data from the physician (incl. diagnosis)
  • Medical services + overview of costs
  • If applicable, prescriptions (with medication, price and stamp of the pharmacy) prescribed the physician

You can conveniently send us the information via e-mail or post. The processing usually takes 2 weeks.

A liability insurance pays the costs of damage you cause unintentionally in your daily life. This includes damage to property (damage or destruction of objects) and personal damage (damage of health, injury or death of third parties). For property damage the insured amount is up to EUR 1,000,000 per person and up to EUR 250,000 for damage to rented property.

For claims we strongly recommend noting the names and addresses of witnesses. Please also avoid acknowledging the liability for damage at the location of the accident. This can lead to a loss of insurance coverage as the examination of the circumstances is the duty of the insurer. For further processing we require a damage report with all available information and documents:

  • Description of the event
  • Names and addresses of witnesses
  • Police reports
  • Photos
  • Invoices

You can easily send us the information via e-mail or post. The processing usually takes 2 weeks.

  13. As a welfare state, Germany aims to have comprehensive primary health care for the entire population. One of the pillars of this philosophy is the German healthcare system. This includes both statutory and private health insurance. Different groups of persons in Germany are subject to compulsory health insurance. This includes all students enrolled in state-run or state-recognized institutions of higher education under the age of 30.

At the beginning of their studies, students are allocated to a statutory health insurance company. From the time of enrolment students have three months to decide whether they want to be insured via statutory health insurance (GKV) or a private health insurance (PKV). This decision is binding and cannot be reversed for the duration of the enrolment. Those who opt for private health insurance can be relieved from the health insurance obligation.

However, we recommend that all interested persons who are already insured with a statutory health insurance to remain insured in the statutory health insurance. There are some groups of persons who are not eligible for statutory health insurance and must therefore obtain private health insurance. These include:

  • Language students who are not yet enrolled as students in a university or university of applied sciences
  • Students over 30 years of age (can be insured by a statutory health insurance, but must expect very high costs)
  • (in many cases) trainees and visiting scientists

We will be glad to inform you about this via telephone.

Essentially, the two offers differ in the duration of the insurance and the application area in which the coverage is valid.

In terms of the application area, MAWISTA Science offers the advantage of offering worldwide coverage for foreigners in Germany and it even covers up to 6 weeks in their home countries. This way, it covers also the medical costs for illness or accidents during short-term visits to their home country (the insurance coverage does not cover persons from countries with embargos or sanctions).

MAWISTA Student can be concluded for a period of up to four years. With MAWISTA science, uninterrupted coverage of up to five years is possible.

Note: Find out more about the precise Differences between the two rates MAWISTA Student and MAWISTA Science.

The fastest way for you to receive your insurance documents is if you choose e-mail as the mode of dispatch in the insurance application. You will receive a reply of whether your application has been approved within 24 hours on working days. If we have accepted your application, the legally valid insurance policy is attached to the e-mail.

You can also request the insurance policy via post. After your information has been successfully checked, we send out your MAWISTA insurance policy on the same day. In general the insurance policy will reach you within 2 days.

Yes, we will provide you with a confirmation of your insurance as soon as your application is approved. Our confirmation is recognised by the immigration authorities and universities/universities of applied sciences as proof of health insurance. Usually it is enough if you present a copy to the immigration authority or university.

Yes, you can obtain insurance from us if you are enrolled in university in Germany and are not residing longer than five years in Germany or if the entire insurance duration is no longer than five years.

You can switch to MAWISTA if you are a visiting scientist, Postdoc, PhD or Student with a temporary residency permit in Germany. Please first clarify the cancellation deadlines with your previous health insurance and make sure that you do not have double insurance. Then you can apply for the desired insurance protection online. Our staff will be glad to inform you about a suitable MAWISTA follow-up contract.

We recommend that you apply for the maximum insurance duration as a subsequent application for extension may be rejected. With a longer duration you will also continue to have health coverage if you stay longer than planned in Germany. If you decide to leave early you can cancel your insurance contract at any time without stating reasons to the end of each month.

If you are already insured in the tariff MAWISTA Science, then family members can also sign up for our MAWISTA Science or alternatively in the MAWISTA Visum product. Each family member must sign up for the insurance product separately. We do not offer family insurance.

Your MAWISTA insurance protection covers Germany mainly as well as temporary stays (e.g. vacations) worldwide insurance coverage + home country up to 6 weeks per insurance year .

Your physician or hospital will present you with an invoice for visits without overnight stays (out-patient treatment). You must transfer the payment to the attending physician or the hospital. Cash payment is only requested in rare cases. If you have to stay at the hospital as an in-patient (i.e. overnight) please inform the emergency hotline of the insurance company immediately. The emergency hotline will coordinate the details of assumption of the costs with the hospital directly. This offers you the advantage of not having to first pay high hospital costs yourself as the insurer pays the hospital directly.

There is no flat co-payment rate for treatments. This means that the insurer reimburses you the costs for acute and unforeseeable medical illnesses and accidents. However, in certain cases there can be upper limits, e.g. for dental treatment, dental prostheses, adjuvants or the transport back to the home country. The insurer assumes the costs up to the upper limit. For detailed information of the conditions see the general insurance conditions for the respective rate.

“Waiting period” denotes the time after the contract has been concluded in which there is still no insurance coverage.

Most services of MAWISTA Science are not subject to a waiting period. The only exceptions are pregnancy treatments and delivery. For both these cases there is a waiting period of 8 months after the beginning of the contract.

Example: If the insurance begins on 1 January, then the costs incurred within the first 8 months for pregnancy examinations and treatments as well as delivery are not reimbursable. In this case, the costs of pregnancy examinations and treatments as well as delivery would only be assumed from 1 September.
